Infigratinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Your body clears infigratinib using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, concentrated rooibos extract slowed this same enzyme down. The theory is that if that enzyme works more slowly, your cancer medicine could clear out less efficiently and build up a bit more than expected, which could mean stronger side effects like high phosphate levels, eye problems, mouth sores, dry mouth, tiredness, or nail and skin changes.

Here is the honest part: this is based only on lab research, not on people, so we really do not know if a normal cup of rooibos tea matters at all. Casual tea drinking is likely low risk, but concentrated rooibos extracts are the bigger question mark. Since infigratinib is a serious cancer drug, please run any rooibos use past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Infigratinib Used For?

  • Infigratinib is used in adults who have received previous therapy to treat a certain type of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) that has spread to nearby tissues or other parts of the body and cannot be removed by surgery. Infigratinib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop or slow the spread of cancer cells.
