Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and maintain bone strength. The softgels also contain gelatin and glycerin as inactive ingredients to form the capsule and keep the oil liquid.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin A is effective for vitamin A deficiency and possibly effective for oral leukoplakia, aging skin, measles, ulcerative colitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Vitamin D is effective for familial hypophosphatemia, osteomalacia (soft bones from vitamin D deficiency), renal bone disease, rickets, and hypoparathyroidism.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Vitamin A is generally well tolerated at recommended doses, but high doses can build up in your body and become toxic, causing liver damage, headache, skin problems, and in severe cases, coma. Vitamin D is also well tolerated at recommended doses; excessive amounts over time can cause toxicity with high blood calcium levels.
Both vitamins have special pregnancy considerations: vitamin A at high doses (especially as retinol) can cause birth defects, so stick to recommended amounts only. Vitamin D safety in pregnancy isn't specified in our data — talk with your doctor before taking higher amounts.

High doses of vitamin A can increase bleeding risk with warfarin, raise the chance of a serious brain condition called pseudotumor cerebri if you're also on tetracycline antibiotics, and compound liver damage if you're taking other hepatotoxic drugs.

Cod Liver Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, cod liver oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
High doses of cod liver oil, 20-40 mL daily, have been associated with prolonged bleeding time and reduced platelet aggregation in healthy volunteers.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking cod liver oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some clinical research shows that cod liver oil may lower blood glucose levels in women with gestational diabetes who are already taking antidiabetes drugs when used for at least 12 weeks. However, it does not appear to have any effect on blood glucose when used for shorter durations. Until more is known, use caution.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking cod liver oil with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Cod liver oil can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
