HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Constipation Formula by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
TerraVita Constipation Formula contains 3 active ingredients as a proprietary blend in liquid form: artichoke leaf glycerite liquid extract, boldo glycerite liquid extract, and black radish glycerite liquid extract. The formula also includes glycerin as an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supporting these ingredients is limited. Artichoke leaf is possibly effective for high cholesterol and indigestion, but there's not enough reliable evidence to rate boldo or black radish for any of their traditional uses — which include gallbladder disease, kidney stones, and joint pain for boldo, and biliary disorders and diabetes support for radish.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Artichoke is generally well tolerated but can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, hunger, and nausea. Rare cases of anaphylaxis have been reported in people sensitive to inulin.
If you're allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, daisies, or other plants in the Asteraceae family, you're at higher risk for an allergic reaction to artichoke. Boldo poses a more significant safety concern: it contains ascaridole, a liver toxin, and cases of hepatotoxicity — including elevated liver enzymes and jaundice — have been reported.
It can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Boldo is unsafe in pregnancy (it may stimulate the uterus) and should be avoided while breastfeeding.
Artichoke should also be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. Black radish is generally safe in normal food amounts but there isn't enough data on concentrated supplement forms.
The data on this product during pregnancy and breastfeeding advises against use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking TerraVita Constipation Formula, ask your pharmacist or doctor about these medication types: drugs that harm the liver, blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (including warfarin), blood pressure medications, diabetes medications, lithium, and the transplant drug tacrolimus. Also mention any drugs your liver processes through CYP2C19 or CYP2B6 enzymes if you know them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're taking blood pressure, diabetes, or blood-thinning medications, or any drug metabolized by your liver, check with your pharmacist before starting this formula. The boldo ingredient carries particular liver-toxicity concerns.
Avoid this product if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Constipation Formula by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
TerraVita Constipation Formula contains three active ingredients, two of which have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern involves boldo, which contains ascaridole, a liver toxin. Taking boldo with drugs that can harm the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) theoretically increases your risk of liver injury — and cases of elevated liver enzymes and jaundice have been reported in patients taking boldo alone.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Boldo also interacts with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Moderate severity), raising bleeding risk; with lithium, potentially increasing lithium levels; and with the transplant rejection drug tacrolimus, which may become less effective. Artichoke leaf interacts with blood pressure medications (Moderate), diabetes medications (Moderate), and certain drugs your liver processes via CYP2C19 and CYP2B6 enzymes (both Moderate).
Black radish theoretically increases low blood sugar risk (hypoglycemia) when combined with diabetes medications (Moderate).
We could not check the proprietary blend itself for interactions — its exact amounts aren't disclosed — but we have reviewed its three named components. Altogether, these interactions span 773 individual medications.
Use the medication checker below to look up your exact prescriptions before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Constipation Formula with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Boldo Glycerite Liquid Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking boldo with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
Animal and in vitro research shows that boldine, a constituent of boldo, has antiplatelet activity. In one case report, an adult taking a combination of boldo and fenugreek with warfarin experienced an increase in international normalized ratio (INR); however, it is unclear if this effect was due to boldo, fenugreek, the combination, or another factor.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking boldo with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatic injury and disease.
Boldo leaf contains ascaridole, a known liver toxin. Many cases of hepatotoxicity, including elevated liver transaminase levels and jaundice, have been reported in patients taking boldo.
Lithium
Theoretically, taking boldo with lithium might increase the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
Boldo is believed to have diuretic effects. Theoretically, these diuretic effects might reduce the excretion of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
Tacrolimus (Prograf)
Taking boldo with tacrolimus may decrease the levels and clinical effects of tacrolimus, potentially increasing the risk of transplant rejection.
In one case report, a patient with a long-term history of stable tacrolimus levels developed subtherapeutic levels after taking boldo 300 mg twice daily orally for several weeks. Tacrolimus levels returned to normal after discontinuing boldo. However, the mechanism of this interaction is unclear.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
A combination of boldo and fenugreek was thought to be associated with an increased international normalized ratio (INR) in a female on warfarin. It is not clear if boldo, fenugreek, or the combination played a role in this interaction. Therefore, boldo may have additive effects with warfarin.
Artichoke Leaf Glycerite Liquid Extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, artichoke leaf extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies shows that taking artichoke leaf extract for 8-12 weeks can modestly reduce fasting plasma glucose when compared with placebo.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, artichoke leaf extract may increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies in patients with hypertension shows that taking artichoke can reduce systolic blood pressure by around 3 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by around 2 mmHg when compared with placebo.
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, artichoke might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that artichoke leaf extract inhibits CYP2B6 activity. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, artichoke might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that artichoke leaf extract inhibits CYP2C19 activity. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Black Radish Glycerite Liquid Extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, radish might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research shows that radish extract, juice, and sprouts can reduce glucose levels. Animal research also shows that radish root juice 300 mg/kg reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose in a rat model of diabetes, with effects similar to glibenclamide.
