Critical Digestion Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Critical Digestion against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Critical Digestion by Enzyme Science
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Critical Digestion has 23 active ingredients: digestive enzymes and probiotics that work together to support food breakdown and gut health. The enzyme side includes Amylase (breaks down carbs), Protease (breaks down protein), and Lipase (breaks down fats), plus several others like Cellulase, Xylanase, and Invertase that target specific fiber and sugar compounds.
The probiotic blend contains live strains including Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS, L. gasseri, L. bulgaricus, Bacillus subtilis (DE111), and L. plantarum, along with Lactobacillus paracasei—beneficial bacteria meant to support digestion and gut flora. The product also includes two inactive ingredients: Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose and Water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for most ingredients in this product is limited. Lactase, one of the enzymes, is Effective for lactose intolerance—so if you have trouble digesting dairy, this ingredient should help.
L. acidophilus DDS (a probiotic) is Possibly Effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. DE111 (Bacillus subtilis) is Possibly Effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
For most of the other enzymes and probiotics, the evidence we hold is rated Insufficient—meaning we don't have enough reliable data yet to say whether they work for their intended uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Overall, the individual ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy adults. However, a few points matter.
Protease and Lipase can rarely cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in some people. Protease is not recommended during pregnancy unless a doctor prescribes it, and there's little safety data during breastfeeding.
Lipase has limited pregnancy safety data, so use it only if your doctor advises it. Lactase is likely safe in pregnancy.
The probiotic strains (L. gasseri, DE111, L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus DDS) are generally well tolerated but have limited pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data—check with your doctor first. In rare cases, live probiotic organisms have been associated with serious infections in people who are very ill or immunocompromised; if you fall into that group, discuss this product with your healthcare provider.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity): The live probiotic organisms in this product—L. gasseri, DE111, L. bulgaricus, and L. acidophilus DDS—can lose effectiveness if taken at the same time as antibiotics. Separate them by a few hours and discuss the timing with your pharmacist or doctor.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Critical Digestion may help if you have trouble digesting certain foods or want to support your gut bacteria, especially if you're managing lactose intolerance or antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The main thing to watch: if you take antibiotics, time them a few hours apart from this product so the antibiotics don't kill the beneficial bacteria in it.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a serious digestive condition or weakened immune system, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Critical Digestion by Enzyme Science Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Critical Digestion by Enzyme Science contains several probiotic and enzyme ingredients, some of which interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity): four probiotic strains in this product—L. gasseri, DE111 (Bacillus subtilis), L. bulgaricus, and L. acidophilus DDS—can theoretically have their effectiveness reduced if taken at the same time as antibiotics, because antibiotics may kill the live organisms in the product. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
To get the most out of these probiotics, separate them from antibiotics by a few hours if you can. The specific timing your doctor or pharmacist recommends will depend on the antibiotic and your situation.
We were unable to check several other ingredients in this product—Amylase, Cellulase, Xylanase, Invertase, Lactobacillus paracasei, Glucoamylase, Pectinase, Maltase, Hemicellulase, Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV, L. casei, L. rhamnosus, Beta Glucanase, Alpha Galactosidase, L. plantarum, and ATPro—because we hold no interaction data for them.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact drugs before you start.
