What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried Culver's root extract, which is also known as black root. It's a plant-based supplement traditionally used for its strong laxative properties.
The supplement also includes ethyl alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We don't hold effectiveness ratings for Culver's Root in our data, so the evidence for what this supplement actually accomplishes isn't established here. If you're curious about what it's meant to do, your pharmacist can point you toward the research.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Modern safety data for Culver's Root are limited, and the fresh root can cause serious digestive trouble. The supplement may cause abdominal pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, or drowsiness.
Liver toxicity has been reported after large doses. Stay away from Culver's Root during pregnancy because of its strong laxative effect and lack of safety data — it's rated possibly unsafe.
Avoid it while breastfeeding too, since there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe for your baby.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Culver's Root, make sure to check with us if you're on warfarin (Coumadin) or other blood thinners, diuretics (water pills), or digoxin (Lanoxin) for your heart. These are the medication types documented to interact with black root.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Culver's Root is best avoided if you take blood thinners, diuretics, or heart medications like digoxin. The limited safety data and potential for digestive upset — plus the pregnancy and breastfeeding cautions — mean it's worth a conversation with your pharmacist before you start.
If you're on any prescription medication at all, check it against your meds first.

Culver's Root by Herbalist & Alchemist Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Culver's Root by Herbalist & Alchemist does interact with several medication types, and there are a few you'll want to discuss with us before starting it.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is with blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin). This supplement has strong laxative effects, and diarrhea can actually boost how much warfarin your body absorbs, raising your bleeding risk.
If you take warfarin, you'll need to avoid excessive amounts of Culver's Root.
It also pairs poorly with diuretics (water pills). Black root can worsen the potassium loss these drugs already cause, which can be dangerous — you might need your potassium supplement adjusted.
Additionally, if you take digoxin (Lanoxin) for your heart, large amounts of Culver's Root could bind to it in your gut and make the drug less effective, though the concern is mainly with overuse. Altogether, these interactions span 78 individual medications.
Before you add this to your routine, run your exact medications through the checker below — especially if you're on a blood thinner, a diuretic, or a heart medication.

dried Culver's root extract
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, the overuse or abuse of black root can increase the risk of adverse effects of cardiac glycoside drugs. Black root chemically binds with the glycosides while in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which may reduce their effectiveness if used concomitantly.
Diuretic Drugs
Overuse of black root might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking black root along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Black root has stimulant laxative effects. In some people black root can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can increase the effects of warfarin, increase international normalized ratio (INR), and increase the risk of bleeding. Advise patients who take warfarin not to take excessive amounts of black root.
