Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Bioenergy Ribose, a five-carbon sugar your cells use to make energy. The capsule also includes two inactive ingredients — hypromellose and stearic acid — which help form and stabilize the capsule.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Leans against

The strongest graded evidence we hold for the stated purpose leans against a benefit.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: energy and athletic performance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia, Congestive heart failure (CHF), Coronary heart disease (CHD), Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery — and 3 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Ribose is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Ribose is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Coronary heart disease (CHD), Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Congestive heart failure (CHF), Fibromyalgia, and more.

The evidence for ribose's effectiveness is mixed and limited. For athletic performance and McArdle disease, it's rated possibly ineffective.

For restless legs syndrome, muscle soreness, heart failure, and recovery after heart surgery, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it either way. In other words, we don't have solid data showing it works for any of these conditions.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Ribose is generally well tolerated in the short term — up to about a month in studies — but long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so caution is warranted if you're thinking of using it long-term. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: diarrhea, nausea, and stomach discomfort.

Headache, low blood sugar, increased appetite, lightheadedness, and mild anxiety have also been reported; lowering the dose has resolved these symptoms in some cases. There isn't enough safety information to recommend ribose during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Ribose.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check your exact medications if you take insulin or any antidiabetes drugs (such as metformin, glyburide, or empagliflozin). Both carry a Moderate risk of increased low blood sugar when combined with ribose.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with graded evidence leaning against its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

D-Ribose might interest athletes or people with certain muscle disorders, but the evidence for its effectiveness is weak or absent. The real concern is blood sugar — if you take insulin or any diabetes medication, you need to check this product with your pharmacist first.

Stick to short-term use, and watch for stomach upset or low blood sugar symptoms.
