The evidence for ribose is mixed and often limited. For athletic performance and McArdle disease (a genetic muscle disorder), ribose is rated possibly ineffective.
For restless legs syndrome, muscle soreness, congestive heart failure (reduced pumping ability of the heart), and recovery after bypass surgery, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works. Ribose is generally well tolerated for short-term use (up to one month in studies), but long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied, so use caution if you plan to take it regularly. The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, and low blood sugar.
