What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dimethylethanolamine (also known as deanol), a compound thought to influence acetylcholine levels in the brain. There are no inactive fillers or other ingredients in this powder.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for deanol is limited. It's rated likely ineffective for Alzheimer disease and tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder).
For aging skin, ADHD, and athletic performance, there isn't enough reliable evidence to establish whether it works or doesn't. The data we hold doesn't show a clear benefit for any established use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Deanol is generally well tolerated orally, but side effects can and do occur. The most common are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.
It's also been reported to cause headache, insomnia, confusion, and mood changes. At doses above 1,000 mg daily, mood changes including depression and hypomania have been reported, especially in people with psychiatric conditions.
At 1,500 mg daily, it's been reported to worsen schizophrenic symptoms in people with chronic schizophrenia. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy, so it's best to avoid it during pregnancy.
Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticholinergic drugs (such as certain allergy medications or drugs for overactive bladder) or cholinergic drugs (such as medications for myasthenia gravis). Both drug types are documented to interact with this product, though both interactions are minor in severity.
The medication checker on this page can help you verify your specific prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
DMAE Bitartrate might appeal to people interested in brain health, but the evidence for its effectiveness is weak or absent. If you take any medication that affects acetylcholine—anticholinergic or cholinergic drugs—check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Anyone with a history of mood disorders or schizophrenia should discuss this product with their healthcare provider first, given the reported effects on mood and psychiatric symptoms at higher doses.

DMAE Bitartrate by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
DMAE Bitartrate by BulkSupplements.com contains dimethylethanolamine (deanol), which has documented interactions with anticholinergic drugs and cholinergic drugs through its effect on acetylcholine levels in the brain.
Altogether, these interactions span 219 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Deanol is thought to increase acetylcholine, which means it could theoretically decrease how well anticholinergic drugs (medications that block acetylcholine) work. It might also amplify both the desired effects and side effects of cholinergic drugs (medications that boost acetylcholine).
Both of these interactions are rated Minor in severity.
If you take any anticholinergic or cholinergic medication—including certain allergy drugs, some medications for overactive bladder, or drugs for myasthenia gravis—run them through the medication checker on this page before you start.
