By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Dyer's Broom product and its label doesn't state a use — see Dyer's Broom's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Dyer's broom may cause nausea and vomiting when taken by mouth, and overuse can lead to diarrhea. The main caution here is that it contains potentially toxic alkaloids and has little safety data overall, so use with care.

During pregnancy, dyer's broom is rated possibly unsafe because it may affect the uterus and safety isn't established — you should avoid it. While breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so it's best to skip it during lactation as well.

Caffeine

Theoretically, dyer's broom might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Dyer's broom contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in dyer's broom.
