Dyer's Broom and Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CAFFEINE

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls under CAFFEINE — the group Dyer's Broom interacts with.

Theoretically, dyer's broom might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Dyer's broom contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in dyer's broom.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The medicine you asked about has three parts, but this interaction only touches the caffeine piece. Dyer's broom contains a compound called genistein, which in lab-based thinking may slow down a liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that normally clears caffeine. If that happens, caffeine could linger longer and hit a little harder, leaving you feeling jittery, restless, racing-hearted, or having trouble sleeping.

Here is the honest part: this is theoretical. The slowdown was seen with high-dose purified genistein (1 gram daily), and we don't know if the small amounts in dyer's broom do anything at all. The aspirin and codeine pieces aren't involved here. Still, before pairing the two, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate page

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”

About Dyer's Broom

What is Dyer's Broom?

Dyer's Broom
  • Skin irritation
  • Respiratory complaints
  • Gout
  • Lower back and pelvic pain
  • Digestive upset
  • As a natural yellow dye

Dyer's broom is a European flowering plant best known historically as a source of yellow textile dye, with some traditional medicinal uses. There is very little reliable human research to support any health benefit, and it contains compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used cautiously, if at all. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.
