What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has 2 active ingredients. L-Theanine is an amino acid that may help with alertness and relaxation without causing the drowsiness of caffeine.
Lemon balm aerial parts extract comes from the plant and has traditionally been used to ease tension and support mood. The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients — cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, silica, and stearate — which are fillers, thickeners, and binders used to form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For L-Theanine, the evidence shows it is possibly effective for supporting cognitive function. However, the data we hold does not establish effectiveness for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, or anxiety disorders like generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder; the evidence is insufficient to rate these claims.
For lemon balm extract, it is possibly effective for stress and for depression, and it is also possibly effective for herpes labialis (cold sores). Like L-Theanine, the long-term outcomes and best dosing aren't fully mapped out, so talk to your pharmacist about realistic expectations for either ingredient.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both ingredients are generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied. L-Theanine may cause headaches, drowsiness, increased sleep duration, and vivid dreams.
Lemon balm extract can cause dizziness and sedation, though clinical trials haven't shown these occur more often than with placebo; one rare case of a serious heart rhythm change (atrioventricular block) has been reported after use of a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but causation is unclear. There is not enough safety data for L-Theanine during pregnancy or breastfeeding; the facts advise avoiding it.
Lemon balm extract should be avoided during pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise, and caution is recommended while breastfeeding — talk to your doctor before use if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check if you're on any antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), CNS depressants (sleep aids, anxiety medications, opioids), thyroid hormone replacement, or serotonergic drugs (certain antidepressants). Use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Enhanced Stress Relief may help support everyday stress and mood if you have no blood pressure medications, thyroid medications, or CNS depressants on board. If you take any of those drug types, or any prescription medication at all, run them through the checker below first.

Enhanced Stress Relief by Life Extension Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Life Extension's Enhanced Stress Relief contains two active ingredients that interact with several medication types.
L-Theanine can lower blood pressure and may potentiate antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications) — a Moderate concern. Both L-Theanine and lemon balm extract can cause additive sedation when used with CNS depressants (medications that slow the central nervous system, like sleep aids or opioids); L-Theanine's risk is Minor, while lemon balm's is Moderate.
L-Theanine may also theoretically affect serotonergic drugs (antidepressants that work on serotonin), though clinical reports of problems are absent — this is rated Minor.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lemon balm extract carries a Moderate risk with thyroid hormone replacement therapy; it may interfere with how your body uses synthetic thyroid hormone. L-Theanine has no documented interactions beyond those listed above.
Although we hold no interaction data for lemon balm with other drug types, the interactions we've identified span a significant number of medications. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact prescriptions before starting.

For each ingredient in Enhanced Stress Relief with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
Lemon Balm Aerial Parts Extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
