Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the simple version: your amiloride/hydrochlorothiazide combo (Moduretic) already works to bring your blood pressure down. Theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may gently nudge blood pressure lower too. Put them together and the effects could add up a bit, so in theory your pressure might dip more than expected.

If that happened, you could feel lightheaded, dizzy when standing up, tired, or maybe a little faint. The honest part: this concern comes mostly from animal studies, not solid human research, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. The amount in a normal cup of tea is very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated theanine supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
