Enzyme Packet Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Enzyme Packet against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Enzyme Packet by Nature's Sunshine
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This packet contains 7 active ingredients: bromelain (a pineapple enzyme), protease (a protein-digesting enzyme), cellulase, hemicellulase, biotin (a B vitamin), amylase, and glucoamylase (starch-digesting enzymes). Together they're meant to support digestive breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber.
The inactive ingredients are gelatin, water, cellulose, rice bran, and medium-chain triglyceride—these are the capsule shell and fillers.
Does it work?
Not established
The data we hold shows bromelain's effectiveness is not established for most uses people try it for—hay fever, burns, cancer prevention, nerve pain, circulation, and diabetes all have insufficient evidence. Biotin, on the other hand, is likely effective for biotin deficiency and possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis.
For protease and the other digestive enzymes in this blend, we have no effectiveness ratings on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bromelain is generally well tolerated short-term, but long-term safety data is limited. The most common side effects orally are diarrhea, flatulence, stomach upset, and headache.
Allergic reactions are possible—if you're sensitive to pineapple or have a history of enzyme allergies, be cautious. Protease may cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in some people.
Biotin is generally safe even at higher doses because your body removes excess through urine; high-dose bromelain is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For biotin during pregnancy, dietary amounts and prenatal vitamins are fine, but high-dose supplements should be cleared with your doctor first.
Breastfeeding safety with protease hasn't been well studied.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel)—bromelain may increase bleeding risk. Also check if you take tetracycline antibiotics, where bromelain may theoretically raise drug levels.
No other interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is an enzyme blend for digestive support. If you take blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, tetracycline antibiotics, or any prescription medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—some ingredients have documented interactions.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk it over with your healthcare provider first, since safety data for most of these enzymes in those periods is limited or unknown.

Enzyme Packet by Nature's Sunshine Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nature's Sunshine Enzyme Packet contains bromelain and protease, both of which have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is bromelain's moderate-severity interaction with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications), where it may increase bleeding risk. Bromelain also has a minor interaction with tetracycline antibiotics, which it may theoretically increase in the bloodstream—though a human study found no actual difference in drug levels at typical doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Protease has no interactions documented in our data. We could not check cellulase, hemicellulase, amylase, or glucoamylase because we hold no interaction data for them.
Biotin, the seventh active ingredient, has no known interactions with medications.
Altogether, these interactions span 141 individual medications. If you take any blood thinner, antiplatelet drug, or tetracycline antibiotic, run the exact medication names through the interaction checker below before you start this product.
Even if your drug isn't listed, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first—they know your full medical picture.

Bromelain
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Bromelain may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
There is one case report of a patient experiencing minor bruising while taking bromelain with naproxen. Bromelain is thought to have antiplatelet activity. Whether this interaction is of concern with topical bromelain is unclear. Interference with coagulation of burn wounds has been reported in a patient receiving bromelain-based enzymatic debridement. However, observational research has found that topical bromelain debridement is not associated with increases or decreases in laboratory markers of coagulation when compared with surgical debridement.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, bromelain might increase levels of tetracycline antibiotics.
Laboratory research suggests that bromelain might increase the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. However, a study in healthy adults reported no difference in tetracycline plasma levels when a 500 mg dose was taken with or without bromelain 80 mg.
