Essential Aminos Complex Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Essential Aminos Complex against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Essential Aminos Complex by Puritan's Pride
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Essential Aminos Complex is a capsule containing eight amino acids: L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Methionine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Valine, L-Histidine, L-Threonine, and L-Lysine. These are the building blocks your body uses to make and repair muscle, enzymes, hormones, and other proteins.
The product also contains cellulose and magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients (fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these amino acids varies widely depending on what you're taking them for. L-Lysine shows possibly effective evidence for cold sores (herpes labialis).
L-Methionine is possibly effective for neural tube birth defects in pregnancy. L-Phenylalanine is possibly effective for vitiligo but appears possibly ineffective for ADHD.
L-Histidine is possibly effective for cholera. For most other uses listed — including multiple sclerosis, asthma, kidney failure, and rheumatoid arthritis — the evidence is insufficient to say whether these ingredients work.
This product isn't marketed for a specific condition, so whether it helps you will depend on your own situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Methionine, L-Histidine, and L-Lysine are generally well tolerated at typical doses. L-Phenylalanine is also generally well tolerated in food amounts and typical supplement doses but can cause anxiety, insomnia, constipation, heartburn, nausea, and headache in some people.
L-Threonine has been associated with headache, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal upset including gas and constipation. L-Methionine at high supplement doses may raise dizziness, drowsiness, and vomiting.
People with phenylketonuria (PKU) should not take L-phenylalanine supplements. For pregnancy: L-Methionine and L-Histidine are rated Likely Safe.
L-Phenylalanine's safety in pregnancy has not been established and should be avoided during pregnancy; the same goes for L-Phenylalanine while breastfeeding. For L-Lysine and L-Threonine, supplement safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well studied — talk with your doctor before use.
We have no pregnancy or breastfeeding data on file for L-Methionine's effectiveness claims regarding birth defects, so discuss this with your clinician.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
If you take levodopa (for Parkinson's disease), baclofen (a muscle relaxant), MAOIs (older antidepressants), NMDA antagonists (like memantine for memory loss or ketamine for depression), or 5-HT4 agonists (gut-motility drugs), check your specific medications before starting. The first four carry the most serious concerns.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This blend of amino acids is generally well tolerated, but before you start it — especially if you take a Parkinson's medication, a muscle relaxant, an older antidepressant (MAOI), or any neurological medication — check your exact drugs with our tool or ask your pharmacist. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor first; some ingredients lack safety data in these situations.

Essential Aminos Complex by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Puritan's Pride Essential Aminos Complex contains eight amino acids, and we've found documented interactions with 20 individual medications across the ingredients we were able to check.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Phenylalanine carries the most serious concern: it can reduce how well levodopa (a Parkinson's medication) works in your brain by competing with it for entry into the nervous system. This is a Major interaction.
If you take levodopa, you'll want to check before starting this product.
L-Phenylalanine also has Moderate interactions with baclofen (a muscle relaxant) — it can lower how much baclofen your body absorbs — and with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), older antidepressants that carry a theoretical risk of dangerously high blood pressure if combined with high-dose phenylalanine. L-Threonine has a Major interaction with NMDA antagonists (medications like ketamine and memantine), which it may make less effective by raising nervous system glycine levels.
L-Lysine carries a Minor interaction with 5-HT4 agonists (gut-motility drugs like cisapride), which it may reduce in effect.
We could not check L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, or L-Valine — we hold no interaction data for these three. Run your exact medications through the search tool on this page to be sure.

For each ingredient in Essential Aminos Complex with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Phenylalanine
Levodopa
Phenylalanine, especially in high doses, can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
Phenylalanine competes with levodopa for carrier-mediated transport into the brain. The resulting reduction in levels of levodopa in the brain can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" phenomenon in patients with Parkinson disease.
Baclofen
Concomitant intake of phenylalanine may reduce the intestinal absorption of baclofen.
Phenylalanine and baclofen share the same intestinal carrier for absorption; phenylalanine competitively inhibits the absorption of baclofen, reducing its plasma levels.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-phenylalanine and non-selective MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertensive crisis.
L-phenylalanine is metabolized to tyrosine. Some evidence suggests that L-phenylalanine, given with the non-selective MAOI pargyline, might prevent the elimination of tyramine, increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. However, this was not reported in a small number of patients when using L-phenylalanine with the partially selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline.
L-Threonine
Nmda Antagonists
Theoretically, threonine might decrease the effects of NMDA antagonists.
Threonine increases central nervous system (CNS) glycine levels. Glycine seems to bind a site on NMDA receptors and enhance the activity of the receptors.
L-Lysine
5-Ht4 Agonists
Theoretically, lysine may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists.
Animal research suggests that L-lysine is a partial serotonin receptor 4 (5-HT4) antagonist and inhibits diarrhea induced by the 5-HT4 agonist, 5-hydroxytryptophane.
