HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Extra Strength Serrapeptase by Zazzee Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: serrapeptase, a proteolytic enzyme — a protein that breaks down other proteins. It's derived from the digestive secretions of the silkworm.
The capsule also includes inactive ingredients: hypromellose (a film-coating polymer), rice powder, magnesium stearate (a lubricant), and silica.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for serrapeptase is limited. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for chronic bronchitis, asthma, atherosclerosis, back pain, or osteoporosis.
That means the studies we have aren't robust enough yet to say whether it works for these uses. If you're considering it for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Serrapeptase is generally well tolerated in the short term, though long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied. The most common side effects reported are epigastric pain (discomfort in the upper abdomen), general gastrointestinal upset, and nausea — though in trials these occurred about as often as placebo.
Bullous pemphigoid, a rare blistering skin condition, has been reported. The safety data advises against using this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check your exact medications if you use any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — including warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or similar medications. This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Serrapeptase is generally well tolerated short-term, but the evidence for what it actually treats is still thin. The main concern is its potential to increase bleeding risk when paired with blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs.
If you take any of those medications, check with us or your pharmacist before starting. Long-term safety isn't well established, and it's not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
