What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Fermented Chlorella with Chlorophyll against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Fermented Chlorella with Chlorophyll by Dr. Mercola
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product has 3 active ingredients: chlorophyll (the green pigment found in plants), Lithothamnion glaciale and Lithothamnion tophiforme (types of coralline algae rich in minerals), and a fermented chlorella blend. Chlorella is a freshwater microalga, and fermenting it may make it easier for your body to absorb.
There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold for chlorophyll covers several uses — genital herpes, wound healing, shingles, skin cancer prevention, and pancreatitis — but every one is rated insufficient evidence to know whether it works. In other words, the research hasn't been strong enough to say either way.
We don't hold effectiveness data for the algae ingredients in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorophyll is generally well tolerated when used short-term, though solid safety research is limited. The most common side effect from taking chlorophyll by mouth is photosensitization — increased sensitivity to sun exposure that can cause exaggerated sunburn or skin reactions.
Rarely, oral chlorophyll has been linked to pseudoporphyria, a condition causing fragile, easily traumatized blisters on the hands. The safety data advises against this product during pregnancy.
Safety during breastfeeding isn't known, so avoid it unless your doctor says otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check any photosensitizing drugs you're on — those make your skin sun-sensitive, and chlorophyll may make that worse (Moderate severity). Also flag methotrexate if you take it, since chlorophyll may slow how your body clears it (Moderate severity).
Use the medication checker below to verify your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product might appeal to people interested in chlorophyll's theoretical health claims, but the evidence for those claims isn't established. If you take photosensitizing medications or methotrexate, check with your pharmacist before starting — the interaction risk is real.
The same goes if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Fermented Chlorella with Chlorophyll by Dr. Mercola Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Dr.
Mercola's Fermented Chlorella with Chlorophyll contains chlorophyll, the one ingredient we could fully check for drug interactions. Chlorophyll does interact with medications, most seriously with photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
If you take any of those drugs (like certain antibiotics, NSAIDs, or anti-inflammatory medications), chlorophyll may add to that photosensitivity risk and theoretically make sunburn or skin reactions more likely.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorophyll also interacts with methotrexate (Trexall), a drug used for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and cancer. One case report found that chlorophyll slowed how the body clears methotrexate from the blood, which could raise methotrexate levels to unsafe amounts.
When chlorophyll was stopped a couple of days before the methotrexate dose, clearance returned to normal.
We couldn't check two other ingredients in this product — Lithothamnion glaciale and Lithothamnion tophiforme — because we hold no interaction data for them. The red algae and fermented chlorella are blend containers, so their components aren't broken out separately here.
Altogether, these interactions span 336 individual medications. Before you start this product, use the medication checker on this page to look up any prescription or over-the-counter drugs you're taking.

For each ingredient in Fermented Chlorella with Chlorophyll with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chlorophyll
Methotrexate (Trexall, Others)
Theoretically, chlorophyll may reduce the clearance of methotrexate.
In one case report, a 54-year-old male developed delayed clearance of intravenous high-dose methotrexate with concomitant use of chlorophyll. When chlorophyll was stopped 2 days prior to methotrexate treatment, methotrexate clearance was unaffected.
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.
