HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Flax-O-Mega by Flora
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Flax-O-Mega contains four active ingredients: polyunsaturated fat, linoleic acid, oleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid. These are all fats and fatty acids derived from flax seed oil.
The product also includes several inactive ingredients—carrageenan, glycerin, sorbitol, water, and caramel—which serve as thickeners, humectants, and coloring.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data we hold shows oleic acid is possibly effective for high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and coronary heart disease (CHD). For the other active ingredients in this product, we don't have effectiveness ratings on file.
If you're taking Flax-O-Mega for a specific health goal, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports its use for your situation.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Oleic acid is generally recognized as safe when consumed in normal food amounts, like those found in olive oil. However, concentrated supplements of oleic acid have not been well studied, especially in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
The safety data for supplement-level doses during these periods is limited. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to be, discuss this product with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—they can help you weigh what we know against your individual needs.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (oral medications to control blood sugar), talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product—oleic acid may strengthen their effect and lower your blood sugar further. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check in this product.
The bottom line

For each ingredient in Flax-O-Mega with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
