HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Flaxseed Oil 980 mg by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 4 active ingredients sourced from flaxseed oil: linoleic acid, oleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and a lignan-rich fraction. These are the fatty acids and plant compounds flaxseed is known for.
The softgel capsule also includes gelatin, glycerin, purified water, and carob color as inactive ingredients that hold the oil and give the capsule its form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Oleic acid, one of the main fatty acids in this product, is rated possibly effective for high cholesterol and coronary heart disease based on the evidence we hold. That said, the research we have on flaxseed oil specifically in supplement form is more limited.
Talk with your doctor about whether this fits your cholesterol or heart health goals.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Oleic acid from food sources like olive oil is generally recognized as safe in the amounts people normally eat. However, concentrated supplement doses — like what's in this capsule — haven't been well studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant, there isn't enough data to know whether this supplement is safe for you; talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood sugar medications — antidiabetes drugs may work more strongly when you take oleic acid (Moderate interaction). We couldn't verify the safety data on three other ingredients in this product, so run your complete medication list through the checker on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Flaxseed oil is a source of omega fatty acids and plant lignans that some people add to their routine for heart and cholesterol support. If you take diabetes medication, you'll want to check your specific drugs before starting because oleic acid may boost their effects.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're on any prescription medications or have diabetes.

organic Flaxseed Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, using flaxseed oil in combination with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding.
Small clinical studies show that consuming flaxseed oil might decrease platelet aggregation and increase bleeding time.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining flaxseed oil with other antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical evidence suggests that long-term consumption of flaxseed oil can modestly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while other clinical research shows no effect.
Ezetimibe (Zetia)
Concomitant use of flaxseed oil and ezetimibe reduces the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseed oil.
In one clinical study, concomitant consumption of ezetimibe 10 mg daily with flaxseed oil 2 grams providing 1 gram of alpha-linolenic acid daily blocked the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid, resulting in an overall reduction in alpha-linolenic plasma levels from baseline.
