HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Flaxseed Oil by Herbal Secrets
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Flaxseed Oil contains 5 active ingredients: polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, oleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and linolenic acid — all fatty acids naturally found in flax seeds. The inactive ingredient is the flaxseed oil itself, used as the base.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Oleic acid, one of the active components, is possibly effective for managing high cholesterol and supporting heart health based on the evidence we hold. That said, this is a flaxseed oil product, and the strength of benefit will depend on your individual intake and health status — talk with your doctor about whether it fits your wellness goals.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Oleic acid is generally recognized as safe when you get it from everyday foods like olive oil. When taken as a concentrated supplement like this one, though, safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't solid, so those situations warrant a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
No adverse effects are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against this product if you take antidiabetes drugs (Moderate severity) — oleic acid may increase their blood-sugar-lowering effects and your levels may drop lower than expected. For the polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, and linolenic ingredients, we hold no interaction data, so confirm those with your own doctor or pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
If you take an antidiabetes medication, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product — the oleic acid may strengthen your drug's effect on blood sugar. For others, flaxseed oil is generally well tolerated, but pregnant or nursing folks should clear it with their healthcare provider first.

For each ingredient in Flaxseed Oil with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
