Flaxseed Oil Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Flaxseed Oil against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Flaxseed Oil by Herbal Secrets
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Herbal Secrets Flaxseed Oil is a liquid supplement with five ingredients. The active components are oleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, linolenic acid, polyunsaturated fat, and monounsaturated fat — the fatty acids that give flaxseed oil its nutritional profile.
The product also contains flaxseed oil itself as an inactive ingredient (the base of the supplement).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Oleic acid, one of the key fatty acids in this product, is rated possibly effective for high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and coronary heart disease. We don't have effectiveness data in our records for the other ingredients in this particular product.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Oleic acid is generally recognized as safe when you eat it in normal food amounts — think olive oil in cooking or salad dressing. At concentrated supplement doses, though, there isn't good safety data, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The amounts in food are fine, but we don't know enough about supplement-level doses to say they're safe during pregnancy or nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or similar), let your pharmacist know before you start this product — oleic acid may increase their blood-sugar-lowering effects. We couldn't check the other ingredients in this product for interactions, so run your exact medications through the search tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
If you're looking to support heart health with a flaxseed supplement, this product contains ingredients that have some evidence behind them. But if you take diabetes medications or blood sugar management drugs, ask your pharmacist to check your specific prescriptions first — oleic acid might lower your blood sugar further.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Check with your doctor before starting.

Flaxseed Oil by Herbal Secrets Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Secrets Flaxseed Oil contains five ingredients, and we could check one of them — oleic acid — for drug interactions.
Oleic acid may increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs (medications that lower blood sugar). In preliminary research, people with type 2 diabetes who ate a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil had lower fasting blood sugar levels compared to those eating a diet high in linoleic acid from sunflower oil.
If you take insulin or oral diabetes medications, your blood sugar could drop further, and you'd want your doctor to monitor your levels.

We couldn't check three other ingredients in this product — polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, alpha-linolenic acid, and linolenic acid — because we don't hold interaction data for them. That doesn't mean they don't interact; it means we haven't reviewed them yet.
Altogether, these interactions span 85 individual medications. Use the search tool on this page to check your exact prescriptions before you start.

Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
