What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium bifidum, both live probiotic bacteria designed to support gut health. The capsule also holds rice dextrin and gelatin as inactive ingredients to hold and deliver the bacteria.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and respiratory tract infections. Bifidobacterium longum has been studied for age-related cognitive decline, hay fever, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, anxiety, asthma, and athletic performance, but the evidence for those uses is insufficient to rate it.
The bottom line: there's some promise for gut and respiratory health with the bifidum, but we don't have solid evidence yet for most other conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both bacteria are generally well tolerated in healthy people. However, if you're seriously ill or have a weakened immune system, talk to your doctor first — the data are limited and caution is advised.
Rare side effects with these probiotics include abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, constipation, and in very rare cases, a dry cough. There have been extremely rare reports of bacterial bloodstream infection (bacteremia) in critically ill or preterm infants, though this is not a typical concern for otherwise healthy adults.
Data on use while breastfeeding are limited, so check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Separate this product from antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity) — antibiotics can kill the live bacteria and make the probiotics less effective. Ask your pharmacist or doctor about timing.
The bottom line
