Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 4 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Florajen4Kids contains 4 active probiotic ingredients: two strains of Bifidobacterium (lactis HN019 and Bi-07), one strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus (NCFM), and one strain of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (HN001). These are live beneficial bacteria designed to support digestive health.

The capsules also contain vegetarian capsule material and rice dextrin as inactive ingredients.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: probiotic support for children's digestive health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Colic, Constipation, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Lactose intolerance, Rotaviral diarrhea — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation, Lactose intolerance, Rotaviral diarrhea, Travelers' diarrhea, and more.

The evidence we hold covers only Lactobacillus acidophilus from this product. It's rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori infection, and bacterial vaginosis.

It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease (like eczema and allergies), and the evidence is insufficient to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We don't have effectiveness ratings for the other three strains in this product.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy children and adults. That said, because these are live organisms, there is a small theoretical risk of infection in certain patients—though most reported cases appear linked to translocation of bacteria from other body sites rather than the probiotic itself.

When taken orally in combination with other probiotics, some people report mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, stomach discomfort, or loose stool, but these are uncommon. One trial reported rare skin rash and itching, though it's unclear whether those were caused by L. acidophilus or another ingredient.

The safety data for L. acidophilus in pregnancy is rated possibly safe. We don't have safety information on file for the other three strains.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus.

If your child is taking antibiotic drugs, separate the timing—don't give them together. Antibiotics can kill the live probiotic organisms and reduce its effectiveness.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Florajen4Kids is a four-strain probiotic aimed at children's digestive health, with the most evidence for Lactobacillus acidophilus in conditions like IBS and antibiotic-related diarrhea. The main caution is spacing doses away from antibiotics so the antibiotic doesn't kill off the live bacteria.

Because live organisms carry a small theoretical infection risk and safety data for kids are limited, check with your pediatrician or pharmacist before starting, especially if your child has a weakened immune system or is on antibiotics.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Florajen4Kids by American Lifeline: Common Questions

Does Florajen4Kids by American Lifeline interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Florajen4Kids has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Florajen4Kids contains 4 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is Florajen4Kids safe for my child to take?
Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product is generally well tolerated in healthy children. However, because it contains live organisms, there is a small theoretical risk of infection in certain patients. Since safety data for kids are limited, check with your pediatrician before starting, especially if your child has a weakened immune system.
My child is on an antibiotic. Can they take this probiotic at the same time?
No—not at the same time. Antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in the probiotic, making it less effective. Separate the doses as much as possible, and ask your pediatrician or pharmacist what timing works best for your child.
What does Lactobacillus acidophilus actually do?
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a beneficial bacteria that may help with irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and certain infections. The evidence is solid enough to rate it possibly effective for those uses, though results vary.
Are there any common side effects?
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, or loose stool can happen when probiotics are taken with other beneficial bacteria, but they're uncommon. One trial reported rare rash and itching, though it's unclear what caused them.
Is Florajen4Kids safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
The safety data we hold is only for Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is rated possibly safe in pregnancy. We don't have pregnancy or breastfeeding information for the other three strains, and we have no data on safety for nursing mothers. Talk with your obstetrician or midwife before use.
