HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Formula 2 Starch Digest by NESS Nutritional Enzyme Support System
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This supplement contains six active ingredients, all digestive enzymes. Amylase, protease, lipase, cellulase, and glucoamylase are enzymes that help break down different components of food — starches, proteins, fats, and plant fiber — so your digestive system can absorb them better.
The product also includes Lactobacillus acidophilus, a live probiotic bacteria that supports gut health. The inactive ingredients are plant fiber and water.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence is mixed and mostly limited. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, certain infections like Helicobacter pylori and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, though more research would help confirm how well it works.
For the other enzymes — protease, lipase, cellulase, glucoamylase — we don't have effectiveness ratings in our data. The data on lipase for inflammatory bowel disease and dyspepsia shows insufficient evidence to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Protease is generally well tolerated in most adults, though digestive upset or allergic reactions are possible — occupational exposure to similar enzymes in industrial settings has rarely caused allergic reactions like allergic rhinitis or asthma. Lipase is also generally well tolerated as a supplement, but if you have serious digestive conditions, use it only under medical guidance.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, or mild stomach discomfort can happen when you start probiotics, but these are uncommon and usually temporary.
During pregnancy, protease safety hasn't been established, so it's best avoided unless a doctor prescribes it. Lipase has limited pregnancy data, so use it only if your doctor advises it.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly safe in pregnancy. For breastfeeding, there's little safety data on protease and lipase, so check with your healthcare provider first; Lactobacillus acidophilus data during lactation isn't on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, separate them from this supplement — antibiotics can kill the live probiotic organisms and make them less effective. The enzyme ingredients haven't been thoroughly checked for interactions, so run your full medication list through the tool on this page before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a digestive enzyme blend with a probiotic, most useful if you have trouble breaking down starches or digesting food. If you take antibiotics, you'll need to space them apart from this product — ask your doctor or pharmacist how many hours to leave between them.
