Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Forsythia product and its label doesn't state a use — see Forsythia's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The data we hold does not establish reliable evidence for forsythia's effectiveness in bronchiolitis. There simply isn't enough high-quality research to know whether it works for this condition.

How safe is it?

Limited data
Safety Information · database check
Limited information

Little studied safety information is available for these ingredients — that is not the same as being safe.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 0 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Forsythia is generally used short-term in traditional medicine, but human safety data are limited — we don't have extensive information on how safe it is with long-term use. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, so if you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 123 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Forsythia 450 mg, double-check if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin, clopidogrel, or enoxaparin) — the most serious risk is increased bleeding. Also confirm with your doctor or pharmacist if you're taking azithromycin (Zithromax).

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is limited.

Forsythia may be an option if you're interested in traditional herbal support, but it's most relevant for people not taking blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or azithromycin. If you're on any of those medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should also speak with their healthcare provider before use.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, taking forsythia with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet aggregation. Forsythia might reduce platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D
Azithromycin (Zithromax)

Theoretically, taking forsythia with azithromycin might increase the risk of adverse effects. Animal research in rats shows that taking a single dose of forsythia with azithromycin decreases the clearance and increases the area under the curve of both forsythiaside, a constituent of forsythia, and azithromycin. The mechanism of this interaction is not well understood.
