Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: spinach leaf, 400 mg per capsule. It's a whole-food extract — the leafy green vegetable you'd eat, concentrated into capsule form.

The capsules also hold hypromellose, an inactive ingredient that forms the capsule shell.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Spinach product and its label doesn't state a use — see Spinach's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We don't have reliable evidence in our data to rate spinach leaf for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cognitive function, muscle strength, obesity, or polycystic ovary syndrome. The evidence available isn't strong enough to say whether it works for any of these uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Spinach is safe and well tolerated as a food for most people. It's considered safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

The only serious rare adverse effect reported is methemoglobinemia in infants under 4 months old — so if you have a newborn, this is something to know. Allergic reactions are possible in people sensitive to spinach, and occupational asthma and lung inflammation have been reported from inhaling spinach powder, though that's not a concern with capsules.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Spinach.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 88 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on warfarin (or any blood thinner) — vitamin K in spinach interferes with how these drugs work and may require dose adjustment. Also flag it if you take diabetes medications, since spinach may lower blood sugar and increase hypoglycemia risk.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This is straightforward spinach in a capsule — useful if you're not getting enough leafy greens in your diet, but only if you're not on warfarin or diabetes medications without talking to your doctor first. If you do take blood thinners or blood sugar drugs, check with your own pharmacist or doctor before starting this product, since consistent vitamin K intake matters for warfarin dosing and spinach can lower blood sugar.

Antidiabetes Drugs

There are claims that spinach leaves have hypoglycemic effects. Evidence from clinical research suggests that consumption of a spinach-rich meal reduces post-meal blood glucose levels. Theoretically, spinach might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Spinach contains vitamin K, which can interfere with the activity of warfarin.
In human research, although eating spinach with one meal does not result in coagulation test results outside the therapeutic range, daily consumption for one week necessitates dose adjustment of warfarin. Individuals using anticoagulants should consume a consistent daily amount of spinach to maintain the effect of anticoagulant therapy.

Full Spectrum Spinach Leaf 400 mg by Swanson Premium Brand: Common Questions

Does Full Spectrum Spinach Leaf 400 mg by Swanson Premium Brand interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Full Spectrum Spinach Leaf 400 mg has a known interaction with 88 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Full Spectrum Spinach Leaf 400 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is spinach safe to take while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes — spinach as a food is considered safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and it provides folate, which is helpful in pregnancy. This product delivers spinach in capsule form, so the same safety applies.
Can spinach help with weight loss or PCOS?
We don't have reliable evidence in our data to say whether spinach leaf works for weight loss or polycystic ovary syndrome. The research available isn't strong enough to rate it for either condition.
Are there any side effects I should expect?
Spinach is well tolerated when consumed as a food. Allergic reactions are possible in people sensitive to spinach. Serious side effects are very rare, except in infants under 4 months old, where a blood condition called methemoglobinemia has been reported.
What's in the capsule besides spinach?
The capsule shell is made from hypromellose, an inactive ingredient. There are no fillers or other active ingredients — just spinach.
I'm on warfarin. Can I take this?
Not without checking with your doctor first. Spinach contains vitamin K, which interferes with warfarin's blood-thinning effect, and taking it daily for a week can throw off your warfarin dose. Your doctor may need to adjust your medication or advise against consistent use of this supplement.
