What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gentian root extract in liquid form. The preparation also includes alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients that help deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that gentian works for wound healing, obesity, rhinosinusitis, or gastritis — the data rates all of these as having insufficient reliable evidence. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research to prove it isn't solid enough yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gentian is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, but it can upset your stomach and isn't well studied at high doses. In one trial, patients taking gentian in combination with turmeric and ginger reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and bloating — though it's not completely clear gentian alone was the cause.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so it's best avoided. The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't enough reliable information to recommend it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood pressure medication (antihypertensive drugs). Gentian can lower blood pressure on its own, and combining it with these drugs might cause your pressure to drop too much.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gentian may be worth considering if you're exploring herbal digestive support, but only after checking it against your blood pressure medications with your pharmacist or doctor. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, skip it.
