Gotu kola is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth or applied to skin in the short term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects from oral use are gastric irritation and nausea.

Topically, some people have reported eczema. Liver toxicity is rare but has been reported in at least four cases; however, those products were never tested to rule out contamination or unknown doses.

One monitored trial using 120 mg daily for 6 months found no change in liver function. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because there isn't enough evidence to know it's safe.

Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or thinking about either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
