HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotu Kola Extract Powder by Omica Organics
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gotu kola powder extract. Gotu kola is a plant used in traditional medicine, and this extract concentrates its active compounds.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold shows gotu kola is possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor blood circulation in the legs) and burns. For cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence isn't strong enough to say whether it works.
For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from cancer treatment), it's possibly ineffective based on what we have on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth or applied to skin in the short term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects are gastric irritation and nausea when taken orally, and eczema when applied topically.
Rare cases of liver toxicity have been reported with oral use, though it's unclear whether gotu kola itself was responsible or whether contaminants in those products played a role; one clinical trial of 120 mg daily for 6 months showed no changes in liver function. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy—it's been traditionally avoided, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, pain medications, or tranquilizers) or any drugs that can damage the liver. Gotu kola may increase the drowsiness from the first group and add to liver strain from the second—both are Moderate-severity risks.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola Extract Powder might help with circulation issues or wound healing if the evidence holds up for your situation, but check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you take sedatives, pain medications, sleep aids, or any drugs known to affect the liver. Talk it over with them before starting—especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver concerns.

There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.
