HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotu Kola Leaf by Gaia Herbs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: organic Gotu Kola. It's a traditional herb used to support circulation and skin healing.
The liquid also includes organic alcohol and water as inactive ingredients to preserve and deliver the herb.
Does it work?
Leans against
Gotu kola shows promise for venous insufficiency (poor blood flow in the legs) and burns—both rated possibly effective based on available evidence. For radiation dermatitis, cognitive function, and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence is weaker or too sparse to draw firm conclusions.
There isn't enough reliable data to say whether it helps with generalized anxiety.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated short-term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea.
Liver toxicity is rare but has been reported in at least four cases; however, it's unclear whether gotu kola itself was the cause or whether contaminants in those products were responsible. A clinical trial tracking liver function found no problems at 120 mg daily over six months.
Do not use this product during pregnancy—there isn't enough safety data, and it's traditionally been avoided. Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided then too.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs) or any hepatotoxic medication (drugs that stress the liver). Gotu kola may intensify sedation or add to liver strain—both Moderate severity concerns.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with graded evidence leaning against its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola Leaf might appeal to you if you're dealing with venous insufficiency or burns and want a traditional herbal option. If you take sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or any drug known to affect your liver, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Similarly, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor or pharmacist first—the safety data isn't solid enough to move forward on your own.

Gotu Kola Leaf by Gaia Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotu Kola Leaf by Gaia Herbs can interact with medications, chiefly through its potential to boost sedation and add stress to your liver.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The main concern is CNS depressants—drugs that calm your nervous system, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some anxiety medications. Gotu kola may strengthen their drowsy effects, which could leave you oversedated or impaired.
This is a Moderate severity interaction.
The second concern is hepatotoxic drugs—medications known to strain your liver. Taking gotu kola alongside them could compound liver stress.
This is also Moderate severity. While case reports of liver damage tied to gotu kola exist, it's unclear whether gotu kola caused them or if contaminants in the products were responsible; a controlled trial at 120 mg daily for six months showed no liver function changes, but the concern remains.
Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below to search your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs before you start.
