Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gotu kola mandukparnee powder. Gotu kola is a plant traditionally used in herbal medicine, and this powder form delivers it without any added inactive ingredients or fillers.
Does it work?
Leans against
The evidence for gotu kola is mixed. It's possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the legs) and possibly effective for burns when applied topically.
For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from radiation therapy), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective. For cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
For generalized anxiety disorder, the evidence isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
When taken by mouth, gotu kola is generally well tolerated short-term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects are gastric irritation and nausea.
There's a rare but serious concern about liver toxicity — at least four cases have been reported — though contaminants in the products tested couldn't be ruled out, and the doses used weren't documented. In one clinical trial where liver function was monitored, 120 mg daily for 6 months didn't cause changes in liver function.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy, since there isn't enough information to be sure it's safe. During breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so it's best avoided.
If applied to skin, gotu kola can occasionally cause allergic contact dermatitis (itching, redness, and bumps), though not everyone who reacts to gotu kola products is sensitive to gotu kola itself.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this powder, double-check any medications that affect the liver or cause drowsiness — especially sedatives, anti-anxiety drugs, and pain relievers that carry liver risk. The interaction severity is Moderate for both.
If you're on any prescription medication, use the search tool on this page to check your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with graded evidence leaning against its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu kola may help with poor leg circulation and wound healing, but the evidence is limited and the liver concerns — though rare — warrant caution. If you take sedatives, anti-anxiety drugs, or any medication that affects your liver, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this powder.

Gotu Kola Mandukparnee powder monograph & interactionsGotu Kola Mandukparnee Powder by Herbal Hills Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotu Kola Mandukparnee Powder by Herbal Hills may interact with medications, primarily through its gotu kola content.
The most serious concern is with drugs that affect the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) — there's a theoretical risk that gotu kola could add to their liver-damaging effects. We've found at least four case reports of liver injury tied to gotu kola use, though the evidence is incomplete and it's not clear whether gotu kola was the actual cause in those cases.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Gotu kola may also increase drowsiness if you're taking central nervous system depressants — medications that calm the brain and nervous system, like sedatives or anti-anxiety drugs. Lab research suggests gotu kola might bind to GABA receptors, which could boost their sedative effects.
Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications.
Before you start this powder, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page. If you take anything for the liver or anything that makes you drowsy, run it past your doctor or pharmacist first.
