Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Graviola product and its label doesn't state a use — see Graviola's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold on graviola doesn't establish that it works reliably for any condition. It's been studied for headache, human papillomavirus (HPV), male infertility, and as an insect repellent, but the data for each is insufficient to rate.

That doesn't mean it won't help—just that we don't have solid evidence either way from the studies we reviewed.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Regular use of graviola may be unsafe. The most common side effects reported are belly pain in the upper abdomen and nausea; in one study, patients taking 300 mg daily of graviola leaf extract experienced these symptoms.

More seriously, rare cases have involved movement disorders and nerve damage (myeloneuropathy) with symptoms that look like Parkinson disease. A large study of people with Parkinson disease found that even small amounts of graviola fruit, juice, or herbal tea made their motor and thinking symptoms worse.

The safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding are not reassuring. There isn't enough information to say it's safe during pregnancy, so it's best avoided.

The same holds for breastfeeding—no reliable safety data exist.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Graviola fruit extract may interest you if you're exploring traditional remedies, but the evidence it actually works for anything we have data on isn't there yet. The bigger concern is safety: regular use carries real risks of stomach trouble and potentially serious nerve issues, especially with long-term use.

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking carbamazepine for seizures, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this.

The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
