Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: guggul extract at 750 mg per tablet. Guggul is a resin from the Commiphora tree, used traditionally to support cholesterol and weight management.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — cellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, silica, magnesium stearate, and a vegetarian coating — which are fillers and binders that help form the tablet.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence on guggul's effectiveness is mixed and incomplete. It's rated possibly ineffective for obesity based on the data we hold.
For acne, high cholesterol, and hemorrhoids, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works or not. If you're considering guggul for one of these reasons, talk with your doctor about what the current science supports and whether it's the right choice for you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Guggul is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but digestive upset is common — belching, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and an unpleasant taste have all been reported. Skin reactions (rash, itching, swelling) are also possible and appear to be dose-dependent; the risk was higher at 2,000 mg three times daily than at 1,000 mg three times daily.
A small number of people have had hypersensitivity reactions within minutes of taking it. Rarely, a serious muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis has been reported.
Guggul should not be used during pregnancy — animal and traditional use data suggest it may stimulate the uterus and its safety is not established. There isn't enough safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding either.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin — guggul may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you take beta-blockers (like propranolol), calcium channel blockers (like diltiazem), birth control pills, estrogen or hormone replacement therapy, thyroid medication, tamoxifen, or any medications broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme, because guggul may reduce their effectiveness or worsen side effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Guggul extract may be worth considering if you're exploring traditional remedies for cholesterol or weight, but the evidence for its effectiveness is weak and the interaction list is long. If you take any heart medications, blood thinners, birth control, hormone therapy, or thyroid drugs, you'll need to clear this with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Digestive upset and skin reactions are common, so start low and watch for any rash or itching.

Guggul Extract 750 mg by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NOW's Guggul Extract 750 mg contains guggul, which interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin) — guggul may increase your bleeding risk because early research suggests it has blood-thinning effects of its own.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Guggul also affects how your body handles certain heart and hormone medications. It can reduce the effectiveness of beta-blockers like propranolol and calcium channel blockers like diltiazem by lowering how much of the drug reaches your bloodstream.
It may interfere with birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy by acting like estrogen in your body, and it could theoretically worsen side effects from thyroid medication or tamoxifen (a breast cancer drug) through the same mechanism. Additionally, guggul may speed up how your liver breaks down a wide range of other medications that depend on a specific enzyme (CYP3A4 substrates), potentially making them less effective.
Altogether, these interactions span 758 individual medications. Before you start guggul, check your exact medications with the tool on this page and discuss the results with your doctor or pharmacist — especially if you take any blood thinners, heart medications, hormones, or thyroid drugs.
