How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Some people taking L. acidophilus with other probiotics report uncommon gastrointestinal side effects like belly pain, indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, or burping.
In rare cases, L. acidophilus has been isolated in serious infections like bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream), sepsis, or abscesses; most of these occurred when bacteria translocated from the gut, usually in patients with underlying conditions. One clinical trial with a probiotic combination reported rash and itching in a small number of participants, though it's unclear whether L. acidophilus was the cause.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
