What’s inside
Low disclosure
This softgel capsule contains two active ingredients. Lutigold Lutein and Zeaxanthin Isomers are both carotenoids—plant pigments that concentrate in the eye.
The product also contains inactive ingredients: gelatin, soybean oil, sunflower oil, vegetable glycerin, and less than 2% of other components.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. It appears ineffective for retinitis pigmentosa, necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for AMD. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, breast cancer, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, the evidence we hold isn't strong enough to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both lutein and zeaxanthin are generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. Lutein at doses up to 20 mg daily has not caused adverse effects in trials.
Neither ingredient carries documented side effects. Both are rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation.
That said, lutein supplement safety at higher doses hasn't been well studied during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and zeaxanthin supplement safety during those times isn't well established either. If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (diabetes medications), double-check with your pharmacist before starting this product—zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar.

Healthy Eyes Lutigold Extra by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Healthy Eyes Lutigold Extra by Puritan's Pride contains two active ingredients.
Zeaxanthin isomers carry one documented interaction: a Moderate concern with antidiabetes drugs. Animal studies suggest zeaxanthin may lower blood sugar, which in theory could amplify the effect of diabetes medications and increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
However, human population research hasn't found that increasing dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
