Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This supplement contains one active ingredient: holy basil extract at 500 mg per capsule. Holy basil is a plant traditionally used in Indian and Southeast Asian medicine.

The capsule itself is filled with inactive ingredients — rice flour, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and cellulose — which are common binders and fillers.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Holy Basil's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Holy Basil supports healthy mood and calm.
  • We looked for evidence on: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Stress, Insomnia, anxiety, mood support, relaxation.
  • The closest evidence on file: Holy Basil is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Holy Basil is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Insomnia, Stress.

The evidence for holy basil's effectiveness is incomplete for the conditions it's promoted for. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headaches, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, or diabetes.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the studies so far haven't been large or rigorous enough to call it effective. If you're thinking about trying it for one of these reasons, talk with your doctor about what the current evidence does and doesn't support.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Holy Basil extract appears to be well tolerated over the short term in adults, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported in small studies were loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants experienced these.

The safety data advise against using holy basil during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, since animal research raised concerns and human safety isn't established for either. If you're pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, avoid this product and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before considering any supplement.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Holy Basil.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 212 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as aspirin, warfarin, or clopidogrel) — holy basil may increase bleeding risk. Also flag diabetes medications that lower blood sugar, and any sedatives or older barbiturates like pentobarbital, since holy basil may strengthen their effects.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Holy Basil 500 mg may be worth a try if you're interested in its traditional uses, but only after you've cleared it with your own doctor or pharmacist — especially if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedatives. The evidence for what it actually does is still thin.

Keep an eye out for loose stools or nausea. Don't use it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Holy Basil 500 mg by AN Amazing Nutrition Amazing Formulas: Common Questions

Does Holy Basil 500 mg by AN Amazing Nutrition Amazing Formulas interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Holy Basil 500 mg has a known interaction with 212 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Holy Basil 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my anxiety?
Holy basil is traditionally used for anxiety, but the clinical evidence we have isn't strong enough yet to call it effective. If anxiety is a concern, talk with your doctor about proven treatments and whether holy basil might fit alongside them.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — the safety data advise against it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Animal research raised concerns, and we don't have enough human safety information to know it's okay. Talk with your doctor about what's safe for you during pregnancy or while nursing.
What side effects should I watch for?
Loose stools and nausea are the most common, and a small number of people in studies experienced them. If you notice either one, stop taking it and let your pharmacist know.
Does this work for diabetes?
Some small studies suggest holy basil may lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, but the evidence isn't strong enough to call it effective on its own. Never use it as a replacement for your diabetes medications, and talk with your doctor before adding it if you're on diabetes pills.
Is there anything else in this capsule besides the extract?
The capsule contains inactive ingredients: rice flour, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and cellulose — these are just binders and fillers to hold the extract in capsule form.
