Hops Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Hops Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: hops flower extract. Hops is the flowering part of the hop plant, traditionally used in brewing and herbal medicine.
The extract concentrates its active compounds into liquid form. There are no other active ingredients — the product is hops extract only.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on hops extract doesn't yet support its use for any specific condition. Effectiveness ratings for age-related cognitive decline, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, ADHD, indigestion (dyspepsia), and insomnia all show insufficient reliable evidence.
That doesn't mean it won't work — it means research hasn't established it one way or the other yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hops extract is generally well tolerated over the short term, but drowsiness can occur and long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied. Don't use it during pregnancy — there isn't enough safety information.
While breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so you should avoid it as well. Occupational exposure to hops dust (mainly in industrial settings) has been linked to respiratory symptoms like cough and chronic bronchitis.
A small number of postmenopausal women taking hops-and-soy supplement combinations reported abnormal bleeding, though it's unclear whether hops alone caused this or if soy played a role. Allergic reactions and contact dermatitis can occur from contact with fresh hops plant material or pollen.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check this product with your doctor or pharmacist if you take sedative medications (like benzodiazepines or sleep aids) — hops may increase drowsiness — or if you're on hormone replacement therapy, since hops might reduce its effectiveness. Also flag it if you take medications broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP1A2, though the interactions there are rated Minor.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hops extract is best used short-term under guidance, especially if you take sedatives or hormone therapy — both warrant a careful conversation with your doctor or pharmacist first. Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
The evidence for what it actually treats isn't established yet, so be clear on why you're considering it and confirm it makes sense for your situation.

Hops Extract by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hops Extract by BulkSupplements.com contains hops flower extract, which has documented interactions with three medication types.
The most serious concern is with sedative drugs (CNS depressants) — hops may add to their drowsiness effect, which carries Moderate severity. Animal research suggests hops itself has sedative properties, so combining it with prescription or over-the-counter sedatives could amplify that effect.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Hops also interacts with estrogen-based medications at Moderate severity. Large amounts of hops might compete with hormone replacement therapy for estrogen receptors in your body, potentially reducing how well the hormone therapy works.
Most hops extracts contain very small amounts of the compounds that do this, but the theoretical risk exists at higher doses.
Two additional enzyme-related interactions are rated Minor: hops extract may theoretically alter how your body metabolizes certain drugs broken down by CYP3A4 (a liver enzyme), though a human study suggests this effect may not be significant in practice. Similarly, while in vitro research flagged a possible effect on CYP1A2 substrates, a pharmacokinetic study found no clinically meaningful interaction at typical doses.
Altogether, these interactions span 864 individual medications. Check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before starting.

For each ingredient in Hops Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Hops flower extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of hops with sedative drugs might cause additive sedation.
Some animal research shows that hops has sedative effects.
Estrogens
Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of hops might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
In vitro research suggests that certain hops constituents can competitively bind to estrogen receptors. However, most hops extracts contain very small amounts of these constituents.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Hops extract does not seem to affect the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that flavonoid constituents of hops inhibit CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, does not affect levels of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.
