Here's the simple version: hops may have a mild calming, sleepy effect, and your Aristada injection can already cause drowsiness on its own. Put them together and you might just feel a bit more tired, foggy, or slow than usual. Things like daytime sleepiness, feeling lightheaded when you stand up, or trouble concentrating could be a little more noticeable.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern, mostly based on animal studies, so it's not a dangerous combination and the long-acting shot isn't affected at the chemical level by hops. Still, since both can add to sedation, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting hops, especially if you drive or already feel sluggish on your medication.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Aripiprazole Lauroxil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.

Here's the gist with Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this medication. Hops might nudge that enzyme to work a little faster, which could theoretically lower aripiprazole levels and make it slightly less effective for keeping your schizophrenia or mood symptoms steady. The good news is this concern rests on lab and animal data, plus one human study where a similar drug dropped only about 8 percent, which isn't enough to matter in real life.

So I wouldn't lose sleep over an occasional hops product for relaxation. Since Aristada is a long-acting injection treating a serious condition, just give your prescriber or pharmacist a heads-up before using hops regularly.

Abilify Asimtufii is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and as maintenance monotherapy for bipolar I disorder in adults. Aristada is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, with Aristada Initio used specifically to help start Aristada therapy.
