Here's the simple version: clonazepam already works by calming down activity in your brain, which is exactly why it can leave you feeling drowsy, foggy, or unsteady. Hops are taken for sleep and relaxation because they may have a mild calming effect of their own. Put the two together and those sleepy effects could stack up, so you might feel more tired, slower to react, or less alert than usual.

I'll be straight with you: this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these things work and some animal studies, not strong human proof. It's not dangerous for most people, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you drive or notice extra grogginess.

Clonazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.

Here's the gist for clonazepam (Klonopin): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear it. Lab and animal studies hint that hops might gently nudge that enzyme to work a little faster, which in theory could lower clonazepam levels and make it slightly less effective for your seizures or panic attacks. Clonazepam is not a prodrug, so faster clearance means weaker effect, not stronger.

The good news: in a real human study, a hops extract changed levels of a similar benzodiazepine by under 8 percent, which is too small to matter for most people. I wouldn't lose sleep over this. Just remember hops can also cause drowsiness on top of clonazepam. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, especially with seizures.

Hops are most often used for sleep and mild anxiety, frequently combined with valerian, but the human evidence is limited and not very strong. They are generally well tolerated when used short-term, though they may cause drowsiness, and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding because their safety is unknown.

What Is Clonazepam Used For?

Clonazepam is approved to treat several types of seizures — including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a severe form of epilepsy), akinetic seizures (sudden loss of muscle tone), myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks), and absence seizures (brief lapses of awareness) in patients who haven't responded to other medicines.

It is also approved for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that might cause panic). Panic disorder involves repeated, unexpected panic attacks along with ongoing worry about having more attacks.
