Why this applies to Norethindrone

Norethindrone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hops interacts with.

Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.

Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down norethindrone, and there's a thought that hops might speed that enzyme up a little. If that happened in a meaningful way, your body could clear the progestin slightly faster, which in theory might make it a touch less effective or lead to some breakthrough spotting.

But honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The evidence is very weak, mostly animal and lab data, and a human study on a similar CYP3A4 medication showed only about an 8% change, which isn't enough to matter. Norethindrone isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't get flipped. Still, if you're using this for endometriosis or to control bleeding, mention the hops to your pharmacist or doctor so you can keep an eye on things.

Hops are most often used for sleep and mild anxiety, frequently combined with valerian, but the human evidence is limited and not very strong. What Is Norethindrone Used For?

Brand names: Aygestin, Norlutin, Nor-QD, Micronor, Norlutate, Camila, Errin, Jolivette, Nora-BE

Norethindrone is a progestin-only oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It is taken every day, continuously, without hormone-free breaks — unlike combination birth control pills.

Gallifrey (norethindrone acetate tablets, 5 mg) is a different, higher-dose formulation approved for three additional conditions: secondary amenorrhea (periods that have stopped), endometriosis, and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance when no structural cause such as fibroids or uterine cancer is present. Gallifrey is not approved or recommended for use alongside estrogen therapy in postmenopausal women for endometrial protection.
