Here's the simple version: hops may have a mild calming or sleepy effect, and desipramine can already make some people feel drowsy or foggy, especially when you first start it. Put them together and that sleepiness could stack up a bit. You might notice extra tiredness, slower thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about how solid this is: the concern is mostly theoretical, based on pharmacology and some animal studies, not strong human research. So it's not a reason to panic. Still, if you notice you feel unusually groggy, be careful driving until you know how you react, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a hops supplement.

Desipramine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Hops extract does not seem to affect the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that flavonoid constituents of hops inhibit CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, does not affect levels of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.

Here's the short version: this one looks pretty quiet. Desipramine is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and lab (test tube) studies suggested that certain hops compounds might slow that enzyme down. On paper, slowing it could let desipramine build up and bring out more side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, or a racing heart.

But when researchers actually tested hops in people, it did not meaningfully change how the body cleared a CYP1A2 marker. So the real-world risk here appears low. One thing worth mentioning: hops on their own can make you sleepy, and desipramine can too, so together you might feel more tired. If you plan to use both regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

Hops are most often used for sleep and mild anxiety, frequently combined with valerian, but the human evidence is limited and not very strong. They are generally well tolerated when used short-term, though they may cause drowsiness, and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding because their safety is unknown.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
