Drug & supplement interaction

Calcium + Clonazepam

Clonazepam brand names: Klonopin, Rivotril, Ceberclon.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Calcium and Clonazepam in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Calcium and Clonazepam

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Clonazepam and Calcium in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Clonazepam

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Clonazepam is filed under 5 classifications — including benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, cns depressants. Calcium has documented interactions with 18 drug classes — the most serious being ceftriaxone (rocephin) (major), dolutegravir (tivicay) (major) and elvitegravir (vitekta) (major) — and none of Clonazepam’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Calcium and Clonazepam May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

    Calcium

“Orally, calcium can cause belching, flatulence, nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, and diarrhea. Although constipation is frequently cited as an adverse effect of calcium, there is no scientific substantiation of this side effect. Calcium carbonate has been reported to cause acid rebound, but this is controversial.”

Special populations

Calcium in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Safe

When used orally and appropriately. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends prescribing oral calcium supplementation 1.5-2 grams daily during pregnancy to those with low dietary calcium intake to prevent pre-eclampsia.

Pregnancy And Lactation Possibly Unsafe

When used orally in excessive doses. The Institute of Medicine sets the same daily tolerable upper intake level (UL) for calcium according to age independent of pregnancy status: 9-18 years, 3000 mg; 19-50 years, 2500 mg. Doses over these amounts might increase the risk of neonatal hypocalcemia-induced seizures possibly caused by transient neonatal hypoparathyroidism in the setting of excessive calcium supplementation during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester. Neonatal hypocalcemia is a risk factor for neonatal seizures.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clonazepam page

“Clonazepam (Klonopin) slows brain activity to control seizures and panic, and most of what interacts with it pushes in one of two directions: deepening that sedation or changing how much drug is in your blood. This is a list to approach carefully.”

About Calcium

What is Calcium?

  • Bone health and osteoporosis prevention
  • Dietary calcium deficiency
  • Heartburn relief (calcium carbonate antacids)
  • Supporting healthy teeth
  • High blood pressure support during pregnancy

Calcium is an essential mineral your body needs for strong bones, nerve signaling, and muscle function, and supplements can help fill gaps when diet falls short. Most people do best getting calcium from food, and supplements should be used at the lowest dose needed. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.

Mineral (not a plant part) · Tablets, capsules, chewable tablets, liquids, powders; common salts include calcium carbonate and calcium citrate

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Calcium is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Calcium record says about it on its own.

Calcium: dosing

The right amount of calcium depends on your age, sex, diet, and health needs. Recommended daily amounts are set by health authorities and generally increase with age, especially for older women. There are also upper limits that should not be exceeded without medical advice. Because needs vary, this monograph does not list specific milligram amounts.A few practical tips: your body absorbs calcium best when you take no more than about 500 to 600 mg at one time, so larger daily amounts are usually split into separate doses. Calcium carbonate should be taken with food, while calcium citrate can be taken with or without food.

About Clonazepam

What Is Clonazepam Used For?

Brand names: Klonopin, Rivotril, Ceberclon

It is also approved for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that might cause panic). Panic disorder involves repeated, unexpected panic attacks along with ongoing worry about having more attacks.

Taking Calcium and Clonazepam Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Calcium with Clonazepam?
We do not list a known interaction between Calcium and Clonazepam. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Calcium and Clonazepam have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 4 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
How was the Calcium and Clonazepam combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Clonazepam is filed under 5 classifications, and Calcium has documented interactions with 18 drug classes — none of Clonazepam's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Calcium interact with any other medications?
Yes. Calcium has 168 documented drug interactions in our database — Clonazepam is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
Does Clonazepam interact with any supplements?
Yes. Clonazepam has documented interactions with 206 supplements in our database — Calcium is not one of them. The Clonazepam interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
