Chlortetracycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Calcium interacts with.

Calcium seems to reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Advise patients to take oral tetracyclines at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after calcium supplements. Taking calcium at the same time as oral tetracyclines can reduce tetracycline absorption. Calcium binds to tetracyclines in the gut.

Here's the practical issue with chlortetracycline (Aureomycin) and calcium: when calcium sits in your stomach at the same time as this antibiotic, the two grab onto each other and form a clump your gut can't absorb well. The result is that less of the antibiotic actually gets into your bloodstream, which can mean it doesn't fight your infection as effectively. So this isn't a safety scare, it's more about your treatment possibly not working as well.

The easy fix is timing. Try to take chlortetracycline at least 2 hours before your calcium supplement, or 4 to 6 hours after it. The same goes for calcium-rich foods like milk or yogurt. If you're unsure how to space things around your other medicines, just ask your pharmacist and we'll map it out for you.
