Hydrochlorothiazide falls under THIAZIDE DIURETICS — the group Calcium interacts with.

Taking calcium along with thiazides might increase the risk of hypercalcemia and renal failure.
Thiazides reduce calcium excretion by the kidneys. Using thiazides along with moderately large amounts of calcium carbonate increases the risk of milk-alkali syndrome (hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, renal failure). Patients may need to have their serum calcium levels and/or parathyroid function monitored regularly.

Here's the key thing with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ): unlike most water pills, it actually tells your kidneys to hold onto calcium instead of flushing it out. So if you add a calcium supplement on top, the calcium can slowly build up in your blood. With larger amounts (especially calcium carbonate, like Tums-type products), that buildup can lead to a problem called milk-alkali syndrome, which can stress the kidneys.

Watch for things like nausea, constipation, feeling unusually tired or confused, or peeing a lot. This isn't a reason to panic, and normal dietary calcium is usually fine, but the combo deserves attention. Please don't stop either one on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor, who may check your calcium level now and then.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
