Calcium + Nifedipine
Nifedipine brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, and others.
Calcium has a minor interaction with Nifedipine. Intravenous calcium may decrease the effects of calcium channel blockers; oral calcium is unlikely to have this effect.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS
Why this applies to Nifedipine
Nifedipine falls under CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS — the group Calcium interacts with.
Intravenous calcium is used to decrease the effects of calcium channel blockers in the management of overdose. Intravenous calcium gluconate has been used before intravenous verapamil (Isoptin) to prevent or reduce the hypotensive effects without affecting the antiarrhythmic effects. But there is no evidence that dietary or supplemental calcium when taken orally interacts with calcium channel blockers.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the good news: the calcium you take by mouth, whether from food or a supplement, isn't expected to interfere with your nifedipine. The concern on file comes from intravenous calcium, which doctors sometimes use in a hospital to reverse a calcium channel blocker overdose. That's a controlled, high-dose situation given through a vein, not the calcium pill in your medicine cabinet.
In theory, large amounts of calcium in the blood could blunt how well nifedipine relaxes your blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure. But there's no real-world evidence that swallowing a calcium supplement does this. This rating is theoretical and considered unlikely. Still, if you're starting calcium and notice your blood pressure creeping up, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.

Questions About Calcium or Nifedipine
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Calcium or Nifedipine, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nifedipine page
“Nifedipine (Procardia XL, Adalat) relaxes blood vessels to lower blood pressure and ease chest pain, and I would handle this list with real care, since 11 of its 273 entries carry a major rating. Grapefruit is the one to know cold.”

About Calcium
What is Calcium?
- Bone health and osteoporosis prevention
- Dietary calcium deficiency
- Heartburn relief (calcium carbonate antacids)
- Supporting healthy teeth
- High blood pressure support during pregnancy
Calcium is an essential mineral your body needs for strong bones, nerve signaling, and muscle function, and supplements can help fill gaps when diet falls short. Most people do best getting calcium from food, and supplements should be used at the lowest dose needed. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.
About Nifedipine
What Is Nifedipine Used For?
Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR
Nifedipine treats vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by a spasm in a heart artery) and chronic stable angina (chest pain that comes on with effort). It can be used for chronic stable angina when other treatments, such as beta blockers or nitrates, haven't worked well enough or can't be tolerated.
Nifedipine extended-release tablets, including Procardia XL, are also used to treat high blood pressure. The nifedipine capsule label covers the angina uses only.

Nifedipine Is Linked to Lower Levels of 2 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Nifedipine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Calcium — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
