Calcium + Emtricitabine
Emtricitabine brand name: Emtriva.
Calcium has a moderate interaction with Emtricitabine. Calcium might decrease levels of bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide by reducing its absorption when taken in a fasting state.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
BICTEGRAVIR/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR ALAFENAMIDE (Biktarvy)
Advise patients that bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide and calcium can be taken together if taken with food. However, if taken on an empty stomach, bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide should not be taken with, or 2 hours after, calcium containing products.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the practical scoop for your HIV combo pill that contains emtricitabine (often paired with bictegravir and tenofovir as Biktarvy). Calcium can grab onto part of this medicine in your stomach and lower how much gets absorbed, but only when you take it on an empty stomach. That matters because keeping enough drug in your blood is what keeps your HIV under control, so you don't want anything quietly weakening it.
The good news: this is a theoretical, timing-related issue, and the fix is simple. If you take your HIV pill with food, you can take calcium at the same time without trouble. If you ever take it on an empty stomach, separate them so calcium isn't taken at the same time or in the 2 hours after. Run your routine by your pharmacist to be sure.

About Calcium
What is Calcium?
- Bone health and osteoporosis prevention
- Dietary calcium deficiency
- Heartburn relief (calcium carbonate antacids)
- Supporting healthy teeth
- High blood pressure support during pregnancy
Calcium is an essential mineral your body needs for strong bones, nerve signaling, and muscle function, and supplements can help fill gaps when diet falls short. Most people do best getting calcium from food, and supplements should be used at the lowest dose needed. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.
About Emtricitabine
What Is Emtricitabine Used For?
Brand name: Emtriva
Emtricitabine — sold as Emtriva (capsule and oral solution) and as generic emtricitabine capsules — is used to treat HIV-1 infection. It is always taken together with other antiretroviral (HIV-fighting) medicines, never alone.
Emtriva oral solution is an option for younger children and patients who cannot swallow capsules. Both forms are FDA-approved for this single purpose: treating HIV-1 infection as part of a combination regimen.
