Calcium + Doripenem
Doripenem brand name: Doribax.
Doripenem falls into 2 drug categories that Calcium can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Calcium seems to reduce the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Calcium interacts with whole categories of medication. Doripenem falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Calcium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
1 of 2Why this applies to Doripenem
Doripenem falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Calcium interacts with.
Advise patients to take oral quinolones at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium supplements or calcium-fortified foods. Taking calcium at the same time as oral quinolones can reduce quinolone absorption. Calcium binds to quinolones in the gut.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's some good news that should ease your mind: the interaction we have on file is about oral quinolone antibiotics, where calcium can grab onto the drug in your gut and keep it from being absorbed. Doripenem (Doribax) is different. It's a carbapenem antibiotic, not a quinolone, and it's only given as an injection into a vein, not by mouth.
Because doripenem skips the gut entirely and goes straight into your bloodstream, calcium binding in the stomach simply isn't a factor here. Taking your calcium supplement shouldn't weaken doripenem or change how well it fights your infection. Still, since you're being treated for a serious infection, it's always smart to let your pharmacist or care team know everything you take so they can double-check for you.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Doripenem also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.
Advise patients to take oral tetracyclines at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after calcium supplements. Taking calcium at the same time as oral tetracyclines can reduce tetracycline absorption. Calcium binds to tetracyclines in the gut.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's some good news that might ease your mind. The interaction on file is really about oral tetracycline antibiotics, where calcium can grab onto the drug in your gut and keep it from being absorbed. Doripenem (Doribax) is a different animal. It's a carbapenem antibiotic given as an injection or IV, not a pill you swallow, so there's no stomach absorption step for calcium to interfere with.
Because doripenem bypasses the gut entirely, taking a calcium supplement isn't expected to weaken it the way it would an oral tetracycline. Still, since you're being treated for a serious infection, it's always smart to give your pharmacist or doctor a full list of everything you take so they can double-check for you.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Calcium or Doripenem, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

This page covers Calcium only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Doripenem page lists 84 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Oleander (major), Para-aminobenzoic Acid (paba) (major), Acerola (moderate), Alpha-lipoic Acid (moderate) and Bacillus Coagulans (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 75 moderate · 7 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doripenem page
“Two entries here matter more than all the others, and I would read them first. Doripenem (Doribax) is an intravenous antibiotic reserved for serious bacterial infections, which means anything that weakens treatment or piles on risk deserves genuine caution.”

About Calcium
What is Calcium?
- Bone health and osteoporosis prevention
- Dietary calcium deficiency
- Heartburn relief (calcium carbonate antacids)
- Supporting healthy teeth
- High blood pressure support during pregnancy
Calcium is an essential mineral your body needs for strong bones, nerve signaling, and muscle function, and supplements can help fill gaps when diet falls short. Most people do best getting calcium from food, and supplements should be used at the lowest dose needed. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.
About Doripenem Injection
What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?
Brand name: Doribax
-
Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.
-
Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
