Chlorthalidone falls under THIAZIDE DIURETICS — the group Calcium interacts with.

Taking calcium along with thiazides might increase the risk of hypercalcemia and renal failure.
Thiazides reduce calcium excretion by the kidneys. Using thiazides along with moderately large amounts of calcium carbonate increases the risk of milk-alkali syndrome (hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, renal failure). Patients may need to have their serum calcium levels and/or parathyroid function monitored regularly.

Here's the thing worth knowing about pairing calcium with chlorthalidone: this water pill actually makes your kidneys hold on to more calcium instead of flushing it out. So when you add a calcium supplement on top, calcium levels in your blood can creep higher than they should.

If too much builds up, you might notice things like nausea, constipation, unusual thirst, frequent urination, confusion, or weakness. With larger calcium doses (especially calcium carbonate antacids), there's a recognized risk of something called milk-alkali syndrome, which can stress the kidneys. Food amounts of calcium are usually fine. Please don't stop either one on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor, who may want to monitor your blood calcium now and then.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
