HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Ipriflavone 200 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: ipriflavone 200 mg per capsule. Ipriflavone is a semi-synthetic isoflavone — a compound derived from plant sources — that works on bone metabolism.
The capsule also contains microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, gelatin, and magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Ipriflavone is likely effective for osteoporosis (weak bones) and Paget disease (a condition affecting bone remodeling). These ratings come from clinical research on the ingredient itself.
If you're taking it for another condition, the evidence on file doesn't support that use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Ipriflavone is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though some people experience epigastric pain (stomach discomfort), diarrhea, and dizziness. A bigger concern is that long-term use — 6 months or more — can lower white blood cell counts (lymphocytopenia), which is why the product carries a caution.
There's also limited long-term safety data overall. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety information to know either way — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
The same applies to breastfeeding; safety data are sparse, so discuss it with your healthcare provider before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting ipriflavone, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any drugs broken down by the CYP1A2 or CYP2C9 enzyme systems (a large group including some antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and others), theophylline for asthma or breathing problems, or immunosuppressants after organ transplant or for autoimmune disease — all pose Moderate interaction risks.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Ipriflavone may be worth considering if you have osteoporosis or Paget disease and are looking for a targeted supplement, but the enzyme-inhibition interactions are broad and the long-term white blood cell effects need monitoring. If you take any liver-metabolized medication, theophylline, or immunosuppressants, clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Because of the white blood cell concern, periodic bloodwork may be prudent with extended use.

Ipriflavone 200 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ipriflavone 200 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe does interact with medications.
The main concern is through its effects on how your body breaks down certain drugs — specifically those processed by the CYP1A2 and CYP2C9 enzyme systems in your liver. If you take drugs metabolized by these pathways, ipriflavone could slow their elimination and raise their levels in your blood, potentially causing toxicity.
Altogether, these interactions span 391 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Theophylline (used for asthma and breathing problems) is a Moderate concern: ipriflavone can increase theophylline levels by slowing its breakdown, and there are documented cases of this happening in patients who started ipriflavone. Immunosuppressant drugs (used after transplants or for certain autoimmune conditions) also pose a Moderate risk — ipriflavone may add to their immune-dampening effects, and the product can lower white blood cell counts on its own.
Because the enzyme-inhibition effect is broad, you'll want to run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page before you start. If you take anything for liver metabolism or immune function, your doctor or pharmacist should review the full list with you.

Ipriflavone
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), Pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline (Slo-bid, Theo-Dur, others), zileuton (Zyflo), Zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.
Immunosuppressants
Concurrent use of ipriflavone and immunosuppressant drugs might have additive effects on inhibiting immune function. Some patients taking ipriflavone experience subclinical lymphocytopenia; avoid concurrent use. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).
Theophylline
Concomitant use of theophylline and ipriflavone can increase serum theophylline levels. Increased theophylline levels have occurred in two cases after patients started taking ipriflavone. Ipriflavone is thought to decrease theophylline metabolism through competitive inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
