Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: ipriflavone 600 mg per capsule. Ipriflavone is a plant-derived compound used to support bone density and strength.
The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — cellulose, ascorbic acid, rice powder, ascorbyl palmitate, and silica — which serve as fillers, binders, and stabilizers.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Ipriflavone is likely effective for osteoporosis and Paget disease (a bone disorder that causes abnormal bone growth). The evidence supporting these uses comes from clinical research, though as with any supplement, real-world results can vary by person.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Ipriflavone is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but some people experience stomach pain, diarrhea, or dizziness. There's also concern that long-term use — at least 6 months or longer — can lower white blood cell counts, so caution is warranted with extended use.
The safety data during pregnancy is not sufficient to recommend use, and there isn't reliable safety information for breastfeeding, so those who are pregnant or nursing should avoid this product and talk with their doctor or pharmacist about alternatives.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take theophylline (for breathing problems) — ipriflavone can raise its levels and cause toxicity. You should also double-check if you're on antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, muscle relaxers, blood thinners, or any immunosuppressant medication, since ipriflavone can raise levels of drugs processed through certain liver pathways and may amplify immune suppression.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Ipriflavone may be worth considering if you have osteoporosis or Paget disease and your doctor thinks it's appropriate for you. However, because it interacts with a large number of medications and can lower white blood cells with long-term use, it's not right for everyone.
Before starting, check your medications with your own doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take theophylline, immunosuppressants, or any drugs metabolized by your liver.

Ipriflavone 600 mg by Vital Nutrients Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ipriflavone 600 mg by Vital Nutrients does interact with medications.
The main concern is that ipriflavone can slow how your body clears several drug types, potentially raising their levels in your blood. The most serious documented interaction is with theophylline (a medication for breathing problems): ipriflavone can increase theophylline levels enough to cause toxicity, and this has happened in actual patients.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Ipriflavone also inhibits two major liver enzymes (CYP1A2 and CYP2C9), which means it can raise levels of drugs processed through those pathways — including some antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, muscle relaxers, and others. Additionally, if you take immunosuppressant drugs (used after organ transplants or for severe autoimmune conditions), ipriflavone may add to their immune-suppressing effect, which is a concern because some people on ipriflavone develop low white blood cell counts.
Altogether, these interactions span 391 individual medications. Before you start this product, run your exact prescriptions through the search tool on this page, or talk with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it's safe to combine.

Ipriflavone
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), Pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline (Slo-bid, Theo-Dur, others), zileuton (Zyflo), Zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.
Immunosuppressants
Concurrent use of ipriflavone and immunosuppressant drugs might have additive effects on inhibiting immune function. Some patients taking ipriflavone experience subclinical lymphocytopenia; avoid concurrent use. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).
Theophylline
Concomitant use of theophylline and ipriflavone can increase serum theophylline levels. Increased theophylline levels have occurred in two cases after patients started taking ipriflavone. Ipriflavone is thought to decrease theophylline metabolism through competitive inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
