HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Klamath Blue Green Algae 500 by MaritzMayer Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Klamath Lake Blue Green Algae, a type of spirulina harvested from Klamath Lake. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, which is an inactive ingredient that holds the algae powder.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for blue-green algae is mixed and incomplete in our data. It's rated possibly effective for high blood pressure, which is the strongest claim we have.
For acne, hay fever, iron deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, the evidence isn't reliable enough to rate — we simply don't have solid data yet on whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spirulina blue-green algae is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though some people report mild digestive upset — abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, or flatulence. Allergic reactions are uncommon but have occurred: urticarial rashes (raised, itchy patches), and in one case a severe reaction (anaphylaxis) about six hours after taking tablets.
A few people taking spirulina have also experienced mild gum bleeding or bruising. There's an important safety flag: quality varies widely among algae products, and some carry contamination with toxins or heavy metals.
Our data indicates not enough safety information is available, and contamination risk is a real concern — you should discuss this with your pharmacist before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check it against any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs you take (Moderate risk of increased bleeding), diabetes medications (Moderate risk of low blood sugar), and immunosuppressants used after transplants or for autoimmune conditions (Moderate risk of interference).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product might interest you if you have high blood pressure and want to explore a natural option, but the contamination risk and incomplete safety data make it worth a careful conversation with your pharmacist first. If you take any blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or immunosuppressants, check your exact medications with the tool below before you begin.

Klamath Blue Green Algae 500 by MaritzMayer Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Klamath Blue Green Algae 500 from MaritzMayer Laboratories does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin). Blue-green algae have shown anticoagulant and antiplatelet effects in lab studies, and while a real-world risk is thought unlikely, the interaction is rated Moderate because of the theoretical bleeding risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check this product against immunosuppressant medications (drugs that dampen your immune system after transplants or for certain autoimmune conditions). Blue-green algae stimulate immune activity, which could interfere with how those drugs work.
Similarly, if you take diabetes medications, there's a Moderate-rated risk: spirulina can lower blood sugar, and combined with your prescription it might push your levels too low.
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below to look up your exact drugs before you start.

Klamath Lake Blue Green Algae
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
